Are yoga pants the most comfortable pants ever or what? They don’t bind or pinch, they hug your body with beautiful soft fabric, and they move with your body cos they’re designed and made to allow you to do the yoga moves. Wearing them for not-yoga is truly joyful!
But, would you be seen out in public in them? You know, would you go do your grocery shopping wearing them, or visit the doctor? I’m guessing you wouldn’t go to work wearing them cos they’re a bit casual – unless you’re a yogini of course 🙂
The reason I ask is because I’m noticing that more and more people ARE wearing yoga pants in all kinds of places.
Now I own yoga pants. But when I go out I wear jeans or smart trousers (along with applicable blouses, underwear etc – just before you ask :)). I honestly wouldn’t dream of wearing my yoga pants out of the house. Which got me thinking, why wouldn’t I, and why do so many women wear yoga pants out and about?
So I started noticing:
Women who wear yoga pants clearly spend time working on their bodies. Nothing wrong with that of course – if you love working your body, go for it. I personally prefer my 10-15 minute movement routine rather than sweating for an hour or more in a gym. But that’s me.
I guess I don’t have buns of steel, washboard abs or thighs that could crack a melon with one squeeze. All of which the average public-yoga-pants wearer probably does have.
And I’m okay with that. I’m comfy in my body and could care less what anyone else thinks of it. I also don’t wear yoga pants when I go out – not sure if it’s my sense of what’s appropriate, my sense of modesty, or my innate feminism in not wanting to be observed as a body but treated like a person. Big questions I know…
But if you spend hours working your body, have the abs-thighs-bum, maybe the yoga pants showing off your results are a kind of reward? Or – and this is very likely – if you spend that much time working out, do you feel really comfy in your body and wear what makes you feel good? Or is it about gaining attention and approval?
Yeh I Really Don’t Know…
I honestly don’t know. Maybe I could be comfortable leaving that as one of life’s mysteries 🙂
I only know for sure how I feel – which is that if you like doing it, do it. If you don’t, don’t do it.
To me, yoga pants are practical and my first choice for downward dawg.
They’re also extremely form-fitting and present the body for display and observation, if you look at it that way.
When I go out I want to be focussing on what I’m doing, not on what impression my choice of clothing is making on others, nor on trying to figure out what the expressions on other people’s faces mean about me – played that game for way too long! Life is too short for that shiz! 🙂
