Music To Help You Love Your Body

You know those days when you’re feeling a bit ‘eh’, and then you hear a song you love and you sing along a bit, and then you feel a bit brighter?

Okay maybe it’s just me. No I know it’s not 🙂 There’s quite a bit of research into the way music affects our brain, from increasing a factor that protects our neurons from the effects of stress, to decreasing a factor that reacts to stress. So if you’ve ever played music when you’re feeling ordinary, and noticed this increase, it’s not just because you started doing something different.

What got me thinking about this the new freebie on the site I’ve just written, Ten Tips To Love Your Body, which is available as a free poster (just fill in the form at the bottom of this page) you can print and pop onto your wall.

So – here’s ten songs that make me feel grrrrrrrreat! Not the definitive list and not in any particular order, but a good start on any slow day – please feel free to add your own below 🙂 and please, listen to them thinking about YOU and YOUR body….

I cannot TELL you how much I Love Tina Turner, she’s one of those women who just completely impresses me – and when this is on I cannot sit still –

U2 Beautiful Day
Yes, what more do you need 🙂

Ruthie Foster
I’ve always loved Maya Angelou’s beautiful poem, Phenomenal Woman – and was just deelighted when I heard Ruthie Foster had turned it into music! Enjoy 🙂

The Tokens
This, I think, takes me back to being a little girl in the late 60s, I used to wail along to this song away from everyone else, at the top of my lungs – funny 🙂 Get your stomping feet on 🙂

Men Without Hats
Well what’s not to love? Men without hats, who can dance if they want to, and not only that, but leave your friends behind if they don’t want to dance! Yeh Baby!

Wet Wet Wet
I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes….

Katrina and the Waves
Any day that starts this way is a great day 🙂

Pat Benatar
This is for those I-feel-fat-and-ugly days….

Lady Gaga
I’ve never ‘got’ the name, but she makes some interesting statements… and this one, I like 🙂

This girl’s got *a*t*t*i*t*u*d*e* and I for one love it 🙂

Awwwwwwwww that’s ten – there are so many others, but I defy you to listen to this lot and NOT be dancing 🙂

Remember to share your love-me-and-makes-me-dance songs below 🙂

Ahhhhh No I can’t leave this out…

It’s amazing how music can completely change our attitude. I love the Goo Goo Dolls. I call it my “beautiful music” because that’s how I feel when I listen to it for some reason. Their song “Slide” says it all: “What you feel is what you are and what you are is beautiful.”

@Kate, oh! NICE turn up the music, take a few chances – yeh baby! 🙂 It’s not what you did, it’s how you lived…. all that you do is bound to come back to you… in the end there’s no body else! I’ve not heard of them before, lovely 🙂 thanks for sharing, I’ll keep listening while the dinner’s on 🙂

@Sandy, Glad you like it! Thought you would… I even made a ‘collage’ of it .. with all my own photos which was fun. I really related to it so well, so easily found relevant photos ( (yep! my swish red dress! ) It really encouraged me when I was at a particularly challenging time in my life.. : )

      • Maria on May 4, 2011 at 12:22 pm

Sorry, it’s so obvious to me… 😉 David Bowie!!

Wow, was he young at the time…

        • Sandy on May 4, 2011 at 8:48 pm

@Maria, positively dewey 😀 I’m LOLing about that one, just remembering the era of pop stars in business suits with giant shoulder pads. I loved my giant shoulder pads – I’m seeing them in a few more places lately, as the cycle turns again, heh!
