Lisa Sarasohn is The Belly Queen, a yogini and body therapist, and author of The Women’s Belly Book which has now been translated in Japanese!

She says that place that we have been loathing or hating or trying to get rid of, trying to hide from sight – actually contains our greatest treasure, and for the decades that she’s been the Belly Queen, it’s that irony, it’s that well earned chuckle at the end of that misery that keeps her going.

In trying to control this very womanly feature of ourselves we become detached and detach us from who we really are, you’ve just jumped right to the kernel, or you’ve jumped right to the pivotal understanding that there are many layers of who we are and we can look in the mirror and see what we look like and see our appearance – and that is the surface.

But there are so many forces; cultural and family and bents of personality that can just keep us there on the surface, and some of the hunger that we have and the hunger that drives us is that we want to know ourselves at a much deeper level. Who are we? Are we the image we see in the mirror?

She contends that in our body’s centre we have a portal; we have a gateway into who we are at the deepest most sacred, most stupendous essential level.

When women began getting the vote in England and the United States and elsewhere, when women starting having a measure of political authority, the big bellied body image went out of fashion. Somehow when women started gaining a certain kind of political and even economic equity as men their bodies had to start looking like adolescent boys.
