Fool's Gold

Took in a light movie at the weekend, Fool’s Gold with Matt wotisname-with-the-tan and Kate Hudson. Two things really struck me:

1. Kate Hudson’s gorgeous isn’t she? One of the few celebs who’s NOT taken the ‘I’m not going to be successful unless I’ve got huge breasts’ route – and she’s beautifully natural. Her mum’s obviously done a great job with her own body image, passing that on to Kate.

2. The character of Gemma Hunnicut – perhaps meant to be a Paris Hilton-type – was tiny. I mean tiny. Probably that US size 0. What really struck me was that she was primarily a bimbo (convincingly!) and that her main aim in life was to be “hot”. Nothing between the ears, and a very suggestive sword falling to the deck between her really quite skinny legs.

Mostly I was just struck by how much in-her-gorgeous-female-power Kate Hudson’s character was, and how frail and helpless-seeming was poor Gemma, in her upset that someone didn’t fall over themselves at her “hotness” – yes, that’s pretty much what she said. Sadly, she’s a reflection of what’s going on out in the world of young femaleness – hot is everything, top of the tree, all that matters.

Starving yourself though, makes women fragile both physically, mentally and emotionally, and helpless. Doesn’t seem like much of a tradeoff eh?
