The Cyclone-Larry devastated banana farmers of North Queensland take note: Japanese food shops can’t stock enough bananas to meet consumer demand! Of course, it takes about 15 months for a banana crop to come in, so maybe they don’t have enough crops in the ground to cope with this spike in demand.
The banana craze has been sparked by a new diet – yes, The Banana Diet – publicised on morning TV, reports Time. Nearly 800,000 copies of the book have sold since March this year.
I wonder how people could buy the hype, given that bananas have such a high GI value? Of course, as a herb their nutrient value is excellent. I love a banana smoothie for summer breakfast, along with a slice of toast topped with something yummy. Bananas are a great carb boost to keep you going until lunch time (making sure to have some balancing protein as well). But Japanese dieters seem to think that there’s something magic in them that will help shed some weight.
Bananas have risen 20% in price, and no-one can keep them in stock.
I’ve met a fair few Japanese women, and most of them are small, I mean tiny. I’ve not heard of an obesity epidemic in Japan of the scale that western nations are apparently experiencing, so what gives?
Could it be that our bloody anorexic thinking has affected even the Japanese, whose diet is often recommended as one more healthy than our own? Surely not…….
